Borderlands Not Coming to the Wii U and Here’s Why

Nintendo’s Wii U has opened the door for multiplatform third party titles, welcoming popular titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and Assassin’s Creed III. This has left many wondering what other games and/or franchises will be gracing the new system.

If you were hoping to see Borderlands land on the Wii U, then prepare to be disappointed. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed the primary reason the series won’t be seen on Nintendo’s latest console.

We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands, and the reason why there’s not is because we couldn’t think of a natural, obvious, ‘OMG, I want that for what the Wii U brings to the table’ feature.

Now, you may be thinking that this makes little sense since Aliens: Colonial Marines, another FPS, is being developed for the system. Well, Randy Pitchford thought of that and explained the difference between the two games.

But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie.

So, should Pitchford and the team discover the perfect feature to compliment the Wii U’s Game Pad, Borderlands might make it to the system one day. But for now, don’t hold your breath.

  1. I would attribute the absence of Borderlands 2 to either laziness or lack of vision. The potential for the gamepad’s display is unlimited especially when it pertains to first person shooters.
