Mass Effect 3’s senior environment artist Don Arceta, has today been rather critical of the level designs in the Gear of War franchise.
Arceta explained on Mass Effect the team goes for “a lot more integrated cover”. He says this is because “it’s about making these spaces feel natural and not forced. It shouldn’t ever feel forced, by gameplay or art”.
Not just leaving it on a general level Arctea went onto mention “they just have sandbags everywhere, and we really don’t want to do that. We really want to get away from arbitrary things placed just for the sake of gameplay.”
Pretty strong words about how not to add cover objects but will Mass Effect 3 be that much better because of it? Comment your opinion below.

July 29, 2011 at 9:49 AMMass effect 3 has no business addressing level design of gears of war. It’s a nice thought, but their 3rd person shooter is one based on efficiency in competitive play. They can’t get away with Sloppy cover mechanics, clunky movement, a cumbersome Camera and an overall uninspired effort to deliver an already dated game play system. those things show when you can’t script the “Challenge”. Mass effect is Manageable for most in the game-play department; keeping the story running and characters developing without to many crutches is its only aim.
