Sony’s MMO Players Pony Up For Haiti Relief

Sony Online Entertainment has raised $25,000 through the players of its online games to aid in relief efforts for Haiti, where a devastating earthquake wreaked havoc last week. From January 15th to the 18th, players of SOE games EverQuest, EverQuest 2, and Free Realms were offered the opportunity to buy special in-game items, from which the proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross. Available for the online adventurers to purchase were a Haiti Relief Plush Bear in EverQuest, the Protectors of the Faydark Crate in EverQuest 2, and Zando the T-Rex in Free Realms. The items sold for 500 Station Cash each, around $5 American.

“In just three days we were able to reach our goal of $25,000 and it’s all because of the generosity of our players,” said John Smedley, Sony Online Entertainment’s president. “They really stepped up for a good cause and we’re proud to lend support to the estimated 3 million Haitians affected by the recent earthquakes.”

SOE has been an active participant in charity drives this year. Their Child’s Play charity drive raised approximately $26,900 for children in children’s hospitals across North America. Our hat’s off to you if you participated in either of these charities. Thanks to Sony for their efforts and to you for your generosity!
