The PlayStation 4 launched only a couple months ago, and isn’t even out in Japan yet, but one of the main accessories for the console is a very hard item to find already. The PlayStation 4 camera was rumored to be included in the console’s package, but Sony removed to reduce the cost to compete against the Xbox One.
Looking around the internet’s main retailers, it is about impossible to find one available to order. Sites like Amazon don’t sell it directly, and the cheapest you can find it for the Amazon third-party marketplace is $130 for new. Sites for Best Buy and Target do not have it available for shipping or even a store-pickup option available, while Toys R Us and Walmart do not have a listing at all online for the accessory.
You can always look in stores and hope to luck out, but it is about impossible to find it online without paying a fortune right now, as the cheapest Buy It Now option on eBay is going for $100, a $40 mark-up on the price.
The pattern of this takes on the look of a silent recall over a sell out. Shelves were loaded to the brim the week of Christmas. OR Sony has put making more of these on hold until they meet the demand for the PS4 itself. The system is still selling out!
I’d beg to argue that sony just didn’t realize how big of an accessory the camera was going to be for casual gamers. Everyone that has one seems to be doing those, watch me sit on my couch and do nothing, streams that make absolutely no sense to me.
The camera is not a needed device for The system. it adds to the social features (live streaming, physical games with friends, etc.) and a bit extra fun but again not needed. Don’t let this hold you back from such an amazing system. Sony will catch up soon enough

I bought one at launch. It does the whole facial recognition and voice commands, but there really isn’t much use for it otherwise. People who like to stream their gaming sessions on Twitch use it quite a bit. The Playroom is fun, but it’s more of a tech demo. Not a must have at the moment.
