Borderlands 2 – Legendary Item and XP Farming Guide

Ideal Build

Like many games, Borderlands 2 has a “perfect” or ideal set of equipment. These items are as follows.

  • Level – 50
  • Gun – Conference Call
  • Shield – The Bee
  • Class Mod – Legendary Class or Slayer of Terra
  • Relic – Anything but the Vault Hunter one (doesn’t work)

So why is this build so important? Simply put, The Bee and Conference Call (shotgun) almost feel like they were designed to work together. The Bee gives you unlimited AMP damage (with full shield), which is supplemented by the pellets in the Conference Call (claimed to contain more than other shotguns) and is a lot easier to hit at range. Due to this insane combo, many gamers consider them to be the best items by far, but how do you get them? Well let’s get to level 50 first.

Power Leveling to 50

If you’re not level 50 already, I suggest playing though True Vault Hunter till you hit the end. This will bump every enemy, quest and drop to 49 or better, which is a MUST if you want to farm. Why is this a must? Well the difference between a level 49 items and 50 is absurdly vast. You can see an example of this below.

VS

So whats the best way to level? Well this is really based off your build. The first method is the “easy one”, which requires you breaking Varkid pods. More characters make them evolve faster, so you can quickly farm Adult Pod and score a whopping 1,000 xp (at level 50) per pod. You can find a level 50 breakdown below.

  • Varkid – 300 xp
  • Adult Pod – 1,300 xp
  • Adult Varkid – 600 xp
  • Badass Pod – 3,100 xp

I don’t advise going past Badass pod, as it’s a LOT less common to spawn a Super Badass, Ultimate Badass and especially a Supreme Badass Varkid. You can see a video of me doing this really quick below. I suggest going for Adult Pods (extremely common) and should give very good XP if you can’t kill big bosses.

If you have a good build, are trying to power level an alternate or just want to get XP faster, then I suggest you try this method. Start by selecting between The Bunker, The Warrior and Terra. I would suggest selecting The Warrior, since he will run away after taking a certain amount of damage and ultimately never damage you if you can maintain this amount. However, if you’re looking for a certain weapon, then select that boss to farm. At level 50, each of these bosses should give you 20,000+ XP (25,000 xp for The Warrior), so you can see this is significantly faster than farming Varkids. The only downside is that it’s only efficient if you can kill them fast enough. Finally, don’t forget that reloading the game (save / quit, remake) will spawn you in front of The Warrior (or any boss) and allow you to quickly kill him again.

Obtaining your Class Mod

In Borderlands 2, there are two types of Legendary class mods. The first type is the extremely common “Slayer of Terra”, which grants you +4 in all, but one of your starting skills and some fire damage. You can see an example of the Siren one above.

The other type is the Legendary _____ Class Mod, which gives you skill cooldown, a useful stat boost and +5 in all but 1 of your starting skills. Unlike the Slayer of Terra mod, this one is an extremely rare drop from Vermivorous. Since this is better left to later on, lets get the Slayer mod first.

Now there are two methods you can go about getting this mod. You can either A) Kill Terra till your class drops (should be quick) or if you’re having issues B) Simply ask me. I have a small collection of them from farming him for hours and will more than gladly give them out to people that ask for them. However, if you want to kill Terra, you can check out the video below.

The Bee

Once you hit playthrough 2.5, level to 50 and obtain your Slayer of Terra class mod, you’re finally ready to go after The Bee shield. To get the shield, make sure you have or have done the mission “This Just In” or the enemy you need won’t spawn. Once you’ve done or start this mission, head to the Arid Nexus Bonyard and kill Hunter Hellquest. He is in the tower you can see at the start, so it’s a fairly quick journey. If for some reason you can’t find him or are confused, you can see a quick video of me fighting him below.

At some point (ideally quickly) he will drop The Bee and you’ll be able to go after the shotgun.

Conference Call

After you get The Bee, all low damage, low agro bosses become an absolute joke. As mentioned above, The Warrior won’t actually attack if you do enough damage, so really any shotgun with The Bee should give you protection from his attacks. This fight should be a joke, but if you need it an extended guide is on the next page.

  1. @Grant Gaines I just need help trying to get the bee shield. I also need help with finding some of the Siren heads, if you could help. I’m a level 28 Siren.

  2. @ Maya

To even get these things quickly, you got to reload the game, which makes online play annoying. Honestly speaking, a level 28 Bee will be useless at level 37 and will lead to you having to redo it at level 50 anyway. Also heads are absurdly rare. Between me and my friends, we’ve gotten 1 from Terra out of at least 300 runs.

  3. Hey, I was just wondering if you would happen to have any terra siren mods laying around that I could possibly have? I’ve had no luck whatsoever getting the siren mod >.>. Psn:Naiamd_
    Thanks in advance. :)

  4. Great write up, grant. I’ve farmed for legendary items a lot but my pantry is still missing the great stuff. Add “deebes” and let’s play sometime. I have a few tricks to share too. lvl 50 assassin.

  5. Thank you so much for the helpful guide. I am just about finished up with my TVHM walkthrough and can’t wait to start farming. Do you have a spare terra commando mod I could have?

    PSN: greyhawk22

  6. if I farm the orange grenade mod that is dropped by bewm and boom, will it be leveled. For example, most players fight that boss at right around level 4. so if I take my level 20 character and fight boom and bewm, will it drop a level 4 orange grenade mod or something to my level

  7. @ Bob

It drops based off THEIR level, not yours or the purposed level. This is why I suggest you wait till you’re level 50 and beat the game, since it makes every enemy level 50 and makes it so you can’t get a drop lower than level like 47. (might even be higher like 49)

  8. Thank you for the video. Maybe it is differen on the Xbox but the sand worms continuously spawn up to like five at a time and it seems like every time I fight him the acid only hurts his health instead of his shield. Also what seild are you using? The bee?

  9. @ Jon

They do on the PS3 too, but if he can’t see you, then the game just “stops” (Single Player Only). If you move out from that spot, like 5 worms will pop out and he will attack.
You need him to “suck up” the acid by standing in the geyser. Failing to do so will cause him to lose life, but also fill up the place killing you at some point.
Yes it’s the bee, but any shield will work. The worms have a lot of life, so I was trying to make it easier for people. I could have just pulled out the BM and 1 hit them, but that doesn’t help anyone.

  10. So i haven’t even been playing nearly enough as i should be, Should i focus on first beating the game and leveling up my character before i even worry about the legendary weapons?

  11. Hey there. I noticed you’re on PS3. So am I! Would you happen to have an extra Slayer of Terra lying around for Mechromancer?

  12. Hey im having some serious issues getting a lvl 50 conference call to drop. i have a lvl 30 one on the same account and was wondering if that would prevent another from dropping? Or should i just keep plugging away at it and hope for the best?

  13. Also it doeant appear as if the lower lvl areas in my game have scaled up since i defeated the warrior on tvhm. what can i do to rectify this?

  14. @ Sean

Terra and Verm are default bosses, which are included with the vanilla game. You unlock the ability to fight Terra after beating the game and can fight Verm by letting Varkid evolve.

  15. could you help with getting verm to spawn? or at least give me some tips. psn: smartassemperor

and do you know if verm or hyperious (sry if i mispelled it) drops any legendary weapons?

  16. @ John

I didn’t post a guide for it, since it’s like saying you have a better chance of getting a legendary weapon if you’re wearing a golden colored shirt. There is a THEORY that wearing the Blood of Terra and Hide of Terra makes the Varkid evolve faster, though the red text is also believed to be nothing more than a poem. Another THEORY is that he will only spawn with more people, which appears to be true. I’ve summoned Verm in 10 minutes with 4 people in the room, but I’ve also failed to spawn him after an hour in another room. I sincerely believe that every Varkid spawns with a set “evolve” pattern. By this I mean every varkid is set to “max out” at some point, so 1 varkid might stop at Badass and another at Ultimate, it’s all impossible to tell and purely based off luck.

Verm has like 15 legendary items attached to him, so he’s pretty important if you want any of them. 5 of them are head pieces, 5 of them are the legendary class mods, the Norfleet (rocket), Surprise Package (I think thats it and it’s a grenade) are said to come from him. I believe he has other legendary items, but the Norfleet is the only one people care about. Hyperious also drops legendary weapons, but it’s stuff you can get elsewhere for less work.

  17. great guide. question, you would go after the legendary terra mods before the bee? seems like the bee would help :3

also in the dlc they gave us another invincible. Pete the invincible. in the torgue package. might want to check it out. I had the +5% rare drops thing on and I got nothing orange, so it may just be another worthless boss.

  18. @ Scottyl33t

Well you have to remember that Terra drops a class mod every time, so there isn’t much luck involved. For that reason alone I suggest getting that first, though you can go about it however you want.

The DLC bosses have better rates (according to everything I’ve heard), but they don’t offer anything unique and are harder to kill than anything in the base game. They also have a 1 day lock, so I didn’t bother expanding the guide to include them.

  19. Ahh. see I didn’t know that about dlc bosses. I spent like an hour trying to kill pete and was thoroughly disappointed in the loot.

  20. Hey there, great guide, don’t suppose you have a spare Assassin Slayer of Terra class mod?

    PSN: benjy2000

  21. Really like this guide and your explainations, well done. Am intrested to see/read your take on the new DLC, Tiny Tin’a Attack on Dragon Keep

  22. I need some help getting the infinity pistol. If you could help me out sometime that would be great. (gdruryii). Im a level 54 commando.

  23. Hi Grant,

Great article! Was wondering if you still have any Slayer of Terra class mods available for a Siren? My id on PSN is The11thLetter
