Why Uncharted 3 Doesn’t Have Facial Motion Capture

Naughty Dog’s John Scherr has revealed at Comic-Con why Uncharted 3 doesn’t utilize facial motion capture.

With the likes of L.A. Noire using the technology to its fullest, it seems odd that a game such as Uncharted 3 doesn’t use the technology. After all, the Uncharted games have been labelled to be the closest thing to a Hollywood blockbuster movie.

John Scherr stated the following on this matter:

“It gives us more flexibility to pick the best physical performances and the best audio performances and put them together.”

Instead of using both the visual and audio aspects of an actor’s performance, Naughty Dog will have a choice on which of these aspects will be in the game and makes post production that much easier for them. They’re not restricted to using the audio that was said by the actor during the motion capture if they chose to go that route.

There’s Naughty Dog’s reason but the debate still continues. Some people feel it looks “cartoonish” while others prefer it as they thought it L.A. Noire looked creepy.
