Medal of Honor Beta Hands On

DICE has taken over the development of the online component of Medal of Honor bringing their Frostbite engine and Bad Company formulas to a different franchise. Players now have a chance to play an early build of the game's multiplayer in a closed beta - obtained by reserving the game at specific retailers or getting lucky in website contests - to get a taste of what to expect later this year. If you weren't selected for the closed beta, then let me tell you what its all about and if you should be interested.

E3 2010: Blacklight Tango Down Hands-On Impression

With so many first person shooter games coming out this Fall on the next-generation consoles, Black Tango Down is something fans of the genre should look forward to as the game will be retailing at the low price of $14.99.

E3 2010: Fallout New Vegas Hands-On Impression

Now that RPGs like Final Fantasy XIII are out of the way, the next one on every RPG gamer's list for this year is Bethesda Softwork's Fallout: New Vegas that is scheduled for a Fall release. Fallout: New Vegas is an entirely new game, not a sequel to Fallout 3 or anything like that. On the show floor, only playable for the press, I managed to play the first few levels of Fallout: New Vegas and I am impressed as to how Obsidian Entertainment managed to keep most of the enjoyable elements from Fallout 3 while still adding new features as well.

E3 2010: Brink Hands-On Impression

Brink is one title most first-person shooter fans have been anticipating for a long time . Unfortunately, the game has been delayed until Spring 2011, which was originally scheduled for release in the of Fall 2010. This year at E3, Brink is one of the many playable games from Bethesda. Curious as to what the game had to offer, I went ahead and tired it out and was guided by a Bethesda PR representative to tell me all of the details about the game.

E3 2010: Sonic 4 Episode 1 Hands-On Impression

Sega has a lot of Sonic titles that they have recently released, but none of them is as good as the original Sonic series for the Sega Genesis platform. After almost two decades, the real sequel to Sonic 3 is here on the next generation consoles: the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. At this year's E3, the first episode of Sonic 4 was playable at the Sega booth, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to give it a try.

E3 2010: SOCOM 4 Hands-On Impression w/ the DualShock 3 Controller

A few months ago during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, we brought you an impression on how SOCOM 4 plays using the PlayStation Move. On the show floor for this year's E3, SOCOM 4 is playable again but this time, I tried the game with the DualShock 3 instead of the PlayStation Move controller. It was really loud in the booth, so a headset was supplied to truly experience the intensity of war in the game.

E3 2010: Two Worlds II Hands-On Impression

If there is a westernized RPG that can be considered to be one of the worst ones of all time, that would be Two Worlds on the Xbox 360 and PC. Today at the show floor, one of the games that piqued my interest in was South Peak Games' sequel to Two Worlds on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. By just walking down their booth, I can clearly see that it's nine times better than the first one. Two Worlds II is made from the ground up making the improvements very noticeable.

Alpha Protocol Hands-On Impression

The series finale of '24' this week made me depressed as I'm a big fan of Jack Bauer. With the series coming to an end, a game not too dissimilar to 24 comes in to help ease the pain. That game is Alpha Protocol which is due to come out next week. As I finally had a chance to play the final build of Obsidian Entertainment's Alpha Protocol, Agent Michael Thorton reminds me a lot of Jack Bauer. Both characters are federal agents that will be saving the world, except Agent Thorton doesn't have 24 hours. In my first hour through the game, I'm nothing but enthralled as to what the game has to offer.

Demo Impression: Split/Second

I want to start out by saying that Split/Second is one of the most addicting racers I have played since Burnout. It feels like Burnout if it were to pull a Barry Bonds and use performance enhancers. Its an adrenaline fueled, edge of your seat, action packed racer that has enough explosions to make Michael Bay cry in a corner. Over the 8 different times I played the demo, no two races were the same. The reason for that is the games unique destruction methods which can be triggered by both you AND the A.I. I was skeptical at first seeing a racing game made by Disney. After playing, I felt like an idiot for doubting them for one second (although I am still scared for the Prince of Persia movie).

Record of Agarest War Hands-On Impression

If we look back on the PSOne era, one of the most well known developers that made good RPGs was Red Entertainment. The company developed Thousand Arms, a highly acclaimed RPG with a mix of dating SIM feature that allowed the main protagonist to build relationships with other characters. Almost a decade later, Red Entertainment and Spectral Souls developer (Idea Factory) bring us Record of Agarest War, a next-generation strategy role-playing game with the same dating SIM feature that we found in Thousand Arms.

Final Fight: Double Impact Hands-On Impression

Next week, the Capcom remake of Final Fight and Magic Sword will be released in the form of Final Fight: Double Impact. It's a nice little throwback to the good days of side-scrolling beat-em-ups and hack and slash games. They show that even old arcade style games can be given a fresh breath of life and brought into the public while maintaing a fun and addicting playstyle. Definitly a welcome thing for gamers today who miss the old SEGA and NES titles

3D Dot Game Heroes Hands-On Impression

When 3D Dot Game Heroes was first announced in Japan, I was somewhat hesitant about how the game would turn out. Based on the screenshots and videos released by From Software, it looks pretty childish and very old school. A year passed by and Atlus brought out the announcement that they would be bringing 3D Dot Game Heroes to North America. Knowing Atlus acquired the publishing rights for 3D Dot Game Heroes, I knew that the game would be a lot better than I thought it would be.

GDC 2010: ModNation Racers Hands-On Impression

Once the expo floor opened on March 11th people swarmed in to check out all the booths and pick up some swag. Amongst the chaos I came across a demo of ModNation Racers. I made my way through the cluster of bodies and sat down with the game. I picked up the controller and started driving since the previous player had left mid race. The controls were easy to pick up without any prior time with the game which created an easily accessible and entertaining game. If LittleBigPlanet and Mario Kart had a child this would be their offspring.

GDC 2010: Mafia II Hands-On Impression

After an entertaining visit to 2K's off-site event for a look at Civilization V I was eager to go back to see what they had in store for their other game Mafia II. I was sat down and told that before I got my hands on the game they wanted to give me a little background on their location and characters. The montage kicked off with the main character, Vito, getting off of a train in Empyre Bay in the early 1940s. Empyre Bay is the fictional setting the team has chosen for Mafia II and spans 10 square miles.

GDC 2010: SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy SEALs Hands-On Impression

Yesterday, at Sony's press conference, I had the chance to play a small bit of SOCOM 4 with the new Playstation Move technology. For an early build of the game, it was really well done and let you play through a good portion of one of the missions. The full demo lasted about 15 minutes per person and between Josh and I that came out to a solid 30 minutes with the game.

GDC 2010: Alpha Protocol Impression

Early this morning I had the opportunity to sit down and see how far Alpha Protocol has come. As followers of the upcoming game are aware it was delayed from late last year to June 1st of this year. They claim that the game was completed in time for its original release date, but they wanted to add some more polish. I can safely say that the increased waiting time is a small price to pay for a game that looks to define the genre and further blur the line between 3rd Person Shooter and RPG.
