Gravity Rush Demo Hands-On Impression

The PlayStation Vita sure has a lot of titles that everyone has been looking forward to. In addition to Uncharted: Golden Abyss, another highly anticipated title is Gravity Rush or Gravity Daze in Japan. Earlier today, the PlayStation Store (Japan) released the demo for Gravity Rush. It’s a short demo, but Vita owners waiting for this title can get an idea of how it plays. However make sure you have at least 420MB of space.

The Gravity Rush demo has two episodes.

First Episode
The demo starts with a brief tutorial telling you how to control your character. Once the mini tutorial is done, you will find yourself in the middle of the town square where you will see a black cat sitting on a bench. My initial thoughts on the game is that the presentation looks spectacular. Most of the style is reminiscent of  El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metraton. For a portable title, the visuals looks marvelous, except the part I’ve played shows only one shade of color and that is purple.

As soon as I got to talk to the black cat, your powers are revealed. Using the power of gravity, your character can float in the air and using the gyro controls or the second analog stick, you can make the character go walk on the side of buildings. A blue circle indicator appears when you use the gravity for your advantage. If I were to go and walk at the side of the building, I’ll just have to press the R shoulder button to land.

After getting used to the gravity powers I just got, you will have to go to the marker which will trigger the chapters end where a mysterious girl appears. Who is she? Maybe she’s the villain, but we’ll find out soon when the game comes out.

Second Episode
The second episode shows the combat system of the game. Think of this game as El Shaddai. The combat is purely melee, from what I played. Using the square button, I can execute stylish combos. The enemies of the game are weird as they appear as blobs. Also, I can use the gravity powers along with the melee attack to perform a more devastating attack. However, you should always remember that whenever you’re floating in the air, the gyro controls are sensitive.

The conclusion of the demo ends as soon as I defeat the mini boss. The mini boss that I get to fight is like a giant octopus blob. By simply floating in the air and combining it with my melee attacks you can kill it fast. As soon as the HP bar of the boss depleted, the paw of a cat appears on the weak body of the boss. Simply touch it and the main character will do her finishing attack.
