Rampage Movie Hoping To Overcome ‘Video Game Curse’

As you might know already, movie adaptations for popular video games are usually bad. The Super Mario Bros. movie was ugly and horrendous while films like Max Payne and Hitman strayed too far away from their source material. A new video game movie based on the ‘Rampage’ series is out later this year and it hopes to finally break this evil curse.

IGN had a chance to interview Brad Peyton who is the director for Rampage. Peyton actually never knew about the video game curse until a few weeks after he completed the film. That said, he’s hoping his movie can break the curse. You can read some of his comments down below.

He said: “There’s obviously a pressure to deliver on these things and to ground the movie and to deliver on spectacle and all that, but there also aren’t these expectations to what this character’s supposed to be or what this plot is supposed to be. I didn’t know about this quote-unquote ‘video game curse’ until about two weeks after I finished the movie“.

He also went on to say other video game movies usually fail because they are based on games with huge followings with established stories and characters. Rampage isn’t a huge franchise and the original games did not have a huge plot or meaningful characters. You were pretty much just controlling monsters that are destroying a city.

With that being said, the Rampage movie could succeed because the original games themselves were simplistic. Not to mention the movie stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who is the most popular actor in Hollywood right now. His current film Jumani: Welcome to the Jungle is earning lots of money at the Box Office right now so there’s a chance audiences will show up again to see him in Rampage this April.
