New PS3 Exclusive “The Last of Us” May Be About Brain Fungus

So the new PS3 exclusive that will get a proper reveal at Spike TV’s VGAs is “The Last of US.” The game’s official website has launched and features two trailers, neither of which have any actual game footage.

The first video was released as a teaser which doesn’t have any information about the game other than the fact that it looks set the game around a post-apocalyptic theme. The second video is a bit stranger; it simply shows a couple of ants displaying peculiar movements. Upon further investigation, it has been discovered that this video is a snippet from an episode of BBC Planet Earth that features a type of fungus called a Cordyceps. This fungus has the ability to release spores that get into these ants’ brains, eventually kills them, and grows out of the corpse of said ant.

If you couldn’t stomach the end of this video, what you missed was the fact that there are thousands of different types of Cordyceps fungi; each of these specializes on just one specific species. This fungi exists in nature to maintain a balance among the insects so that no one insect would gain the upper hand. The more numerious a species gets, the higher the likelihood that it will be attacked by the Cordyceps fungi. Could The Last of Us be about Cordyceps finding humans to have become a threat to the world and thus it must perform crowd control? Watch the videos and let us know what you think.

  1. the concept sounds totally compelling. I’m excited. I just hope Sony has some very talented writers and game designers… this could be a big deal if executed well.
