Yes, yes, yes the blue blur we all loved from our Megadrive (Genesis for readers across the pond from me) days has had a pretty rough deal over the last few years, being forced into all kinds of embarrassing and compromising experiences that hasn’t done a whole lot for his credence. However Sonic Generations was called “the Sonic game that players have been waiting and hoping for” by our own Wil Taylor in his recent review of the game. It’s understandable that Sonic fans are exercising some cautious optimism for the character. So where does Sonic go from here? No idea, but he could be going there as early as next year.
Takashi Iizuka, who has been with the Sonic Team since Sonic 3, recently shared his thoughts about the franchise with Gamasutra.
Speaking about the fresh feel of Sonic Generations and the future of the character and his game, Iizuka said
I wouldn’t say that I think Generations is a new start. Instead, it’s more of the peaks of the past 20 years, is the way we’re approaching this. Generations is about taking the past 20 years of history and rolling it into one really fun product. I think, as a result, I would like to make a new standard Sonic, a modern Sonic if you will, in 2012 and beyond.
Some industry commentators have expressed the opinion that for Sonic to truly come back and make a triumphant return he needs to go away for awhile so we can grow to miss the character. Is next year really long enough to capitalise on the renewed vigour Generations has instilled in the fan-base, or is Sonic’s next original game going to return the franchise to the dreaded Sonic cycle?
