Deus Ex: Advertising Revolution

Star Wars advertisement in the PC version of Deus Ex

Interested in the new Star Wars collection on Bluray? As if the press slating the new additions wasn’t enough to make you suspicious about this new collection, Lucasarts has found another way to advertise, by buying ad space in Detroit, in 2027.

In the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a new addition to the loading screens has appeared with the new patch, a small, but quite eye-catching advert, telling us that Star Wars, The Complete Saga will be coming out soon. There are obviously some moral issues surrounding planting advertisements in a game that you’ve paid full price for, something which EA has faced in the past with Battlefield 2142, some gamers have pointed out that the new Deus Ex game uses dynamic billboards, which could bring some slightly frightening rumours into play. While gamers have little to do but hope that Square-Enix doesn’t allow their billboards to become less of an immersion tool and more space to sell, Adam Jensen is left to wonder why people are advertising a collection that came out 16 years ago on a format that is akin to the modern day VHS.

The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of the game are so far unaffected, and a mod has been released specifically to remove these adverts from the game.

  1. Haters gonna hate, no doubt about it, and considering it’s a Game of the Year candidate, some people will doubt the game’s purity now. But hey, better some ads than an anti-piracy program, right?

I mean seriously, people complain about ANYTHING these days. At least get your priorities right.

  2. Thank you George Lucas, for paying for my pirated copy of Deus Ex with your advertisements! : D
