Call Of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught Map Pack (PS4) Review

Unique to Fog is the inclusion of a specific care package drop, obtained at random by completing Field Orders, that grants access to a Maniac upgrade. This knife (axe, rather) wielding Maniac turns the player into Michael Myers for as long as they can stay alive, granting increased speed and damage while restricting the player to only using the axe. What makes this perk so unique is that the Halloween music starts playing for all players across the server, only increasing the sense of dread that Myers might be ready to sneak upon you at a moments notice.

Nightfall, the first new map for the Extinction mode, takes place in northern Alaska in the adequately titled Nightfall Base. Rather than opting for a sprawling level, Nightfall takes place on a smaller-sized base. Hives are clustered together with a plethora of weapons and stashes scattered nearby to give you plenty of variety to your arsenal. The wonderful Chain SAW weapon is available midway through around the second set of hives and remains one of my favorite tools.

Lastly, the included weapon with the Onslaught map pack is actually classified as two unique weapons. Both the Maverick and Maverick-A2 are available with purchase, the latter being a new sniper rifle. The basic Maverick assault rifle is the strongest weapon in its class, second only to the MSBS and its three-round burst. So far, it handles really tightly, perhaps on par with the Remington R5’s recoil while having a slightly faster rate of fire. Maverick-A2 on the other hand is a versatile sniper rifle. It has the lowest base damage out of the five available but holds a unique modifier to its damage. Usually sniper rifles have a 1.1 times damage boost to shots to the chest and torso, but the Maverick-A2 actually holds a 1.2x modifier. When combined with a chrome lined barrel, the rifle actually gains the power to take out a player in a single shot to every part of their body, minus their upper arms and the right leg below the kneecap.

The sum of the four multiplayer maps in the first DLC pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts average out to an above average experience. I frequently found myself voting for any other map that came up on rotation that wasn’t Containment, but I wasn’t finding myself tired enough of the map to drop out of a lobby if I had to play it. The unique Maniac perk for Fog and the new Extinction map both add something new for those that play either mode. And if you’re a sniper type in Ghosts, the Maverick-A2 could easily justify the map pack with one of the strongest weapons in the game.
