Gears 5 Guide – How to Unlock Jack Upgrades

Gears 5 has a lot of new things for fans to enjoy and one of them is the use of Jack as a companion. Either controlled by another player or AI, Jack will be a useful companion during intense firefights as he can do a lot of things to make killing Swarms much easier.

Jack’s usefulness is based on the abilities that you get to unlock. In Gears 5, there are a plethora of abilities that Jack can unlock and there’s an upgrade that you can get to further strengthen it after doing a certain quest.

Now, let’s get into finding Gears 5 Jack Upgrades:

1. Flash

The first ability of Jack can be automatically acquired during the first act. When used, Jack will be able to stun enemies for a brief second.

Upgrade – Flash Freeze: Stun enemies for longer periods
How to unlock Flash Freeze: Complete the Hollow Storm Quest before Act 4 – Chapter 2.

2. Stim

The Stim ability of Jack is another one that automatically gets unlocked during Chapter 4 of Act 1. It is located in the laundry room ahead of the fire. With Stim, you will get a temporary shield that negates damage.

Upgrade – Brawler: Increase melee damage

3. Shock Trap

At the beginning of Act 2, just as when you are helping Oscar with the school of Swarms, you will get Jack’s Shock Trap ability automatically. With this ability, you can lay down a trap on the floor and use that to your advantage to electrocute them. At times, it can be used to solve puzzles.

Upgrade – Seeker: Convert shock traps into enemy seeking bots
How to unlock Seeker: Complete Lost Outsiders Quest before Act 2 – Chapter 4.

4. Hijack Upgrade

Another ability that unlocks automatically in Act 3 – Chapter 1. With this ability, you can control enemies for a brief moment.

Upgrade – Detonator Impact: Control the enemy and make them explode
How to unlock Detonator Impact: Complete Scavengers Quest before Act 2 – Chapter 4

5. Pulse

An ability you get in the beginning of the game. You can use this ability to detect enemies through wells.

Upgrade – Marked for Death: Enemies that are marked get an additional 20% more damage
How to unlock Marked for Death: Complete Condor Crash Site

6. Cloak

A story-related ability that you get to unlock in Act 2 – Chapter 3. You will be invincible but as soon as you get hit, its effect will be gone.

Upgrade – Slayer: Allow players to remain cloaked even if you get hit by enemies.
How to unlock Marked for Death: Complete the Waterworks Quest before Act 3 – Chapter 3.

7. Barrier

Unlocks automatically in Act 3 – Chapter 3. You get to set up a shield that protects the user from enemy fire.

Upgrade – Ultimate Overload: Makes the shield deal damage to enemies once its effect is gone.
How to unlock Marked for Death: Complete the Swarmak Fight in Act 4 – Chapter 1.
