There is no denying that 2017 is Nintendo’s comeback. Not only did the Switch surpass expectations, with the total sales nearing the Wii U, two titles worthy of GotY were released. Naturally, this makes it a tough decision.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was certainly worth the wait. What makes it stand out isn’t the big things, such as story, but all the little things. The ability to tackle problems a number of different ways, ingenious mechanics, even the idea of being able to keep warm a variety of ways allowed players to have their own experience. Perhaps that is what makes this title so thrilling. Despite everyone following the same basic storyline, the resulting adventure will be different. Perhaps someone climbed this mountain, where as someone else took the road, making it feel unique.
On the other hand, Super Mario Odyssey plays a lot like the iconic Super Mario 64. After the basic adventure, which takes place across a number of thrilling and diverse worlds, there are countless moons/side tasks to complete. It’s the type of adventure that involves some thinking outside of the box, with nothing so complicated it requires a walkthrough or guide.
Out of the two of them there is a lot that makes Zelda stand out, but nothing about it can match the simple pleasure of Super Mario Odyssey. And, for this reason, Super Mario Odyssey is our choice for Switch game of the year.
