The Infamous E.T. For Atari Has Been Uncovered In New Mexico Landfill

One of the biggest gaming urban legends over time has been how the remaining unsold copies of E.T. for Atari were buried in a landfill and covered with a layer of concrete. After an excavation earlier today, this legend was proven to be true as multiple copies of the game were found, along with a few others.

E.T. almost brought the downfall of video gaming and with Atari having no idea what to do with the remaining copies, they buried them. Evidently, Atari also chose to bury a few other games, as shrink wrapped copies of Centipede as well as copies of Missile Command were also found in the gaming grave site.

Microsoft was there to film a documentary about this excavation, which should be interesting to see when it is released. In the mean time, we do have some images of the dig site as well as the findings courtesy of Major Nelson.
