Want Mass Effect 3 On PC? You Need Origin

Origin has garnered a fair amount of controversy, documented on this site and otherwise.

Which might be a sore point when all PC gamers will have to download it to play Mass Effect 3. Because a mix of tentative terms of service and EA’s insistence on making sure EA players use it, it’s not a fan favorite.

Now why isn’t Mass Effect 3 coming out on Steam? EA actually has an justification.

“Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.”

Chris Priestly of Bioware revealed the reason for not releasing via Steam. Are you still going to get Mass Effect 3? Does this affect you at all?

  1. Wait, EA wants to provide the best experience, but still shove Origin down our throats??

Do the GameStop and D2D versions require Origin??

  2. So Bioware, seeing as you’re planning on giving me a pathetic part in your game, I’ve decided I’m going to save my money and pirate you instead.

  3. Well, looks like I won’t be picking this up afterall. I have the first two ME games on Steam, as well as the first on on 360. On Origin = No Buy, maybe I’ll go for the 360 version..several months from now.
