PETA Claims Blast at Mario Meant To Be “Tongue-in-Cheek”

Recently, we reported on how animal rights activists PETA had launched a campaign claiming that the recent Super Mario Land 3D promoted the wearing of fur through its portrayal of the Tanooki suit.

We also reported on the response that Nintendo had to to this attack from PETA. Well now it turns out that, PETA was just kidding around guys. Mere days after the group launched the Mario Kills Tanooki website, this email was sent out in PETA’s defense.

“Mario fans: Relax! PETA’s game was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur,” Shakira Croce, PETA’s media coordinator said. “We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.”

Whether or not PETA truly meant no harm in this vicious attack on Nintendo beloved plumber can only be known by PETA themselves but in our opinion, it looks like they finally tried to go a bit too far and are now trying to save face after the wicked backlash that I’m sure was heard the world over.
