E3 2011: Spider-Man: Edge of Time Preview

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions gave Spidey fans a solid game that provided a great deal of entertainment and an awesome story that covered four different Spider-Man universes when it released late last year. Activision plans to give fans another amazing experience by focusing on two of the Spidey universes in order to give the player a better story without splitting everything up and making you keep track of everything going on in the game.

The story this time around focuses on the Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 universes. Anti-Venom has killed Spider-Man in the Amazing universe and Miguel O’Hara (Spidey from the 2099 universe) has to go back in time in order to change the events of Amazing Spidey’s death and keep him alive. This leads into the games unique twist in the story. At certain points in the levels, there will be times when things that happen in one time period will affect things in the other. In the level we were shown behind closed doors, Amazing Spidey had to shut down nuclear reactors before Spidey in the future was killed off by radioactive poison (he claims in the game that his suit can only absorb so much before it overcomes him and eventually will kill him). So the Spider-Man of the past races along in order to shut down the reactors to save his life. The back and forth banter between the two also gives the game a light-hearted atmosphere as well as showing off the signature humor associated with webhead.

Both of the different Spider-Men have different fighting styles similar to those seem in the previous installment seem last year. The Amazing version relies on webbing in order to battle as well as his hyper sense to dash around the battlefield to lay the hurt down on his foes. Spidey of the future uses more feral attacks preferring to go hand to hand and using an upgraded form of the hyper sense that allows him to use a mirror image to assist him in battle. The demo came to fruition with an epic battle between Anti-Venom and Amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the demo was cut short in order to leave us in suspense as to the fate of both of them.

Being a fan of Anti-Venom, it was pretty awesome to see him as the lead villain this time around. His unique abilities allow him to drain Spider-Man of his powers giving him the upper hand in battle. We were told that as the battles between the two rage of, he will become increasingly harder to defeat due to Spidey’s draining strength. It will definitely make for an epic game that will give Spider-Man fans a solid new adventure to lead Spidey through.
