Sega ‘Extremely Optimistic’ of NGP Success

Who wouldn’t expect this.

After Toshihiro Nagoshi of Sega showed Yakuza 4 on the NGP at the launch even in Tokyo, Sega West president Mike Hayes talked about Sega’s view on the NGP.

“We are extremely optimistic about the new device hence our upfront and early commitment,” like most of us he has no idea of what the anticipated handheld will be priced at.

Despite a somewhat successful launch in the US and Europe in ’05 the PSP didn’t maintain the wave they were riding way back when. A mix of DS craziness, the death of UMD, and PSP piracy left Sony’s handheld in the dust. Regardless, Hayes had said that Sega games positive sales on the PSP leaves him with little doubt that the same won’t happen on the NGP.

“I would disagree on the point that PSP failed,” he said. “For those of us that embraced the portable platform from the beginning we had a very successful and profitable run.”

More information on the NGP could be seen at the Game Developers Conference next month or E3 in June.
