Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus Review

Ratchet Featured

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus is the final chapter, or more of an epilogue, to the long running Future series that debuted on the PS3. After releasing two spin-off titles the past several years, many fans were disappointed and demanded for a proper title that ties up the series they started on the PS3. With Into the Nexus coming into play, players will get the “proper” game they want, although it may not be as big and grand as the past three Future titles, but the fun-factor that made the series popular is there.

Into the Nexus puts our favorite duo back in action as both Ratchet & Clank chases down the two of the most dangerous criminals in the galaxy that escaped the Vartax Detention Center. In their search for Vendra and Neftin Prog, the two-most dangerous criminals, Ratchet & Clank will be going through five old and new exotic planets looking for clues and solving puzzles as they uncover another sinister plot that threatens the entire universe. Characters like Captain Qwark, and Tachyon are returning to add humor to the story.

Comparing the quality of the story in Into the Nexus to the past Future titles, I must say that this game has the weakest story of them all due to the length of the game. Instead of the normal eight to ten hour playthrough that fans usually experience in a Ratchet & Clank game, Into the Nexus cuts that in half, making the game short like the Quest for Booty. Is that a bad thing? Not really but the story feels so constrained that it has to be short and not developed enough. Yes, it’s not the best story in the Future series but it’s still acceptable nevertheless as the humor and the exciting moments that we see in the franchise finally returns.

Gameplay wise, the elements we all love in a Ratchet & Clank series are back. Ditching the horde mode type and co-op gameplay that are found in All For One and Full Frontal Assault, Into the Nexus brings back the fun and enjoyable platforming segments of the game. From the various tools and gadgets that Ratchet will have, you will be using portals to get from one area to the next or even use your hoverboots to add that extra speed on your adventure. In the five planets that you will be venturing to, some of the levels are uniquely designed that makes platforming fun where you can walk the full 360 degrees or hopping from one area to the next with zero gravity in place. One of those five planets that you will be going to is a Challenge Arena where you fight enemies in waves and earn rewards. If you have played past Ratchet & Clank titles, you will once again be able to participate in the Challenge Arenas.
