A Series of Fortunate Minecraft Accidents: Texture Packs (Part 1)

For the first of my series of Minecraft articles, we will take a look at a few of the best texture packs.

Texture Packs:

.

Harvest Mooncraft

Pros:

-The menu windows are fantastic  the Harvestmoon style translating incredibly well to Minecraft.

-Lots of future promise with this texture pack. If someone came out with a mod or two that added in more farming and the ability to raise animals it would truly be Harvest Mooncraft.

-Adds a bit of light hearted nostalgia to Minecraft.

.

Cons:

-No new animals. Harvestmoon was as much about the animals as the plants. I was slightly depressed to see the same old cows and chickens.

-Your player texture if overwritten again. While I like this new character model if I had been using a custom texture that I couldn’t replace I would have been very upset. You have been warned.

-Not enough original textures. The creators of Harvestmoon didn’t have Gravel or The Nether and as such those textures were either replaced from scratch or left as is.

.
.
.

Pros:

-Simplicity is the only thing this pack has going for it.If you are looking for a slight upgrade from the original Minecraft textures then this is the pack for you, if you are looking for a large overhaul go with Misa’s.

.

Cons:

-This pack by itself is rather simple – only making slight tweaks to the original minecraft textures. If you’re willing to install another 3 mods along with this one it looks very impressive but then you have to wonder, is this the texture pack or the three other mods that make the game look impressive?

Is it the texture pack or the three other mods that makes the game look impressive?”

-Underground I wasn’t even able to tell I had a texture pack installed.

.
.
Note: This file showed up as ‘s HD Texture Overhaul
.

Pros:

-Misa’s Pack brings minecraft alive making the world feel more organic.

-Lava is downright stunning

-Makes the game feel like Morrowindcraft

-Items and creatures are well done

.

Cons:

-Flowing water looks odd the texture not quite matching up to the quality of the rest.

-The texture pack replaces your character’s texture, you’ve been warned.

-Its easy to miss ore while moving through caves the textures not standing out as much as they do on other packs

.
.
.

Pros:

-New menus are fantastic the workbench is especially well done.

-Your character holds items in new ways the shovel actually digs down instead of just smacking the dirt. (This seems to cause a slight problem while digging up, slowing your swing speed and making you dig slower. Bug?)

– Water is incredibly well done.

– The Sun and The Nether are the two stand outs of this packs. Mixcraft’s Nether feels as though you are taking a sojourn through the plains of hell.

.

Cons:

-An odd christmas theme overtook my world turning my grass to snow and hanging ornaments in all my trees.

.
.
.

Pros:

-The Nether feels like a single plane of blood, surprisingly eerie.

-Makes the game feel like Megamancraft.

-Adds an odd sense of retro-immersion bringing back the feeling of gaming we had as children.

.

Cons:

-Much of the danger is removed from Minecraft with this pack, monsters are easily seen in the dark and you can easily tell what is going on around you.

-No new monster or item textures.

-Light shadows cast on blocks can sometimes be odd, gradient lines of shadow not working correctly and causing blocks to all be different shades.

.

Tron; REZCRAFT

Pros:

-Every block is incredibly well done. From the ladder blocks to doors to crops this texture pack is gorgeous.

-If it weren’t for the monsters and creatures hopping around you could easily lose yourself in this Tron like world.

Cons:

-Without the familiar color scheme of Minecraft there is no way to know what a block is without trial and error. Not knowing that sand is now gray or that stone is blue can leave you floundering in the dark.

-Light isn’t as plentiful, the ambient  glow the torches give off is only a soft light in the darkness.

-It is no longer really Minecraft. While this pack is incredible it feels like it would go better with a total game modification then just a simple texture pack.

  1. Read the review more thouroughly

I’m trying to replace as much as I can with actual graphics. As for textures left as is, those are ones I am having issues with finding equals/haven’t got to yet, and will probably scratch them if I can’t find anything

Items are currently being hammered away at, but I am having issues with the shovel since the handle is so thick. This keeps putting me in a rut

As for mobs, as stated, I just did animals. The cow still needs me to choose which style spot to keep, though, and pigs will have to be done from scratch. For aggressives, I have them planned, but hit a snag. Zombies were going to borrow from DS and be Dark Jacks, but I can’t find a clear sprite. I’ll likely just need to make the shades of black myself. Slimes are living weeds. Skeletons and creepers, I have no clue, but I am looking into Rune Factory for inspiration

As for the player model, if you log on, there is no issue unless you use the default skin. Offline is another story, however. Due to the texture loader though, there is no easy fix. You’ll need to talk to Notch about that

Basically, what you reviewed is no where near done, so don’t worry. Most issues will be solved soon enough
